Binary Clash 360: Nation-wide Cybersecurity Event

Date: May 15, 2025

Binary Code Obfuscation Takes Center Stage in Nation-wide Cybersecurity Event Led by IIT Madras and IIITDM Kanchipuram

As digital applications continue to dominate every facet of the global economy, the need to protect software from unauthorized access, reverse engineering, and tampering has become mission-critical. At the heart of this digital defense lies code obfuscation—a sophisticated method of making code unintelligible while retaining its functionality, thereby enhancing software resilience against cyber threats.

In today’s digital economy, where Intellectual Property (IP) embedded in code drives innovation and competitiveness, code obfuscation is rapidly gaining prominence. It plays a vital role in securing mobile applications, fintech platforms, and enterprise software, ensuring that mission-critical algorithms and business logic remain shielded from adversarial scrutiny.

The field continues to adapt in response to new threats, with ongoing research focused on both improving obfuscation methods and developing more effective detection and analysis tools. Recent advancements in code obfuscation research span areas like control flow flattening, opaque predicates, and homomorphic transformations. However, challenges remain in balancing obfuscation strength with code performance, especially in real-time environments. As malware writers evolve, so must defensive techniques. Research institutions and cybersecurity firms are now joining forces to turn theoretical constructs into deployable security solutions.

At the forefront of this push is CyStar@IITM, an interdisciplinary initiative from IIT Madras. CyStar’s mission is to foster societal trust in digital systems by bridging the gap between academic research, government policy, and industrial application. In parallel, industry leaders such as Protectt.Ai are pioneering robust solutions for mobile and application security. With a strong focus on runtime application self-protection (RASP), threat analytics, and code hardening, Protectt.Ai delivers actionable security to businesses, addressing emerging threats with proactive defense technologies.

Bringing these worlds together, IIT Madras, in collaboration with IIITDM Kanchipuram, hosted BINARY CLASH 360 from February 13 to May 8, 2025—a pan-India competition that immersed students and professionals in the arcane yet critical domain of Binary Obfuscation and Reverse Engineering. The competition unfolded across multiple phases—a Bootcamp, Hackathon, and Capture the Flag (CTF) challenge—drawing over 950 participants from 400+ teams nationwide.

The initiative kicked off with an initial CTF round to shortlist 32 teams (89 participants). This was followed by a five-day BOOTCAMP where participants were introduced to advanced techniques and real-world tools in binary obfuscation and reverse engineering, led by experts from Protectt.AI, Tally, and IIT Madras.

In the third phase, a custom-designed AES encryption program was presented as the Hackathon challenge. Designed by student researchers Reetwik Das, Ritwik Badola, and G. Mahesh under the mentorship of Prof. Chester Rebeiro, this phase simulated the Blue Teaming activity where students deployed obfuscation techniques to defend their binaries.

The final 24-hour CTF marathon saw 15 teams (42 participants) attempting to de-obfuscate binaries created by their peers—mimicking the Red Teaming approach used in industry-grade cyber exercises. Participants’ progress was tracked in real-time on a custom-built leaderboard platform developed by CyStar interns led by Mr. Aathish Subramaniam.

A distinguished jury comprising Dr. Jaimandeep Singh (CyStar, IITM), Dr. Gnanambikai Krishnakumar (IIITDM), Mr. Mohanraj Selavaraj (CTO, Protectt.Ai), and Mr. Teja Chintapalati (Principal Manager, Cyber Innovation, DSCI) reviewed the final submissions.

Winners of BINARY CLASH 360
  • Winners (INR 2,50,000): Sarvesh Aadhithya, Shyamalavannan, Karthik D from Easwari Engineering College and St. Joseph Engineering College
  • 1st Runner-Up (INR 2,00,000): Ketan Anand Roy, Barot Maulik Hirenkumar, Srikrishna Pandey from IIT Roorkee
  • 2nd Runner-Up (INR 1,50,000): Suraj Kumar, Chandra B Nair, Sidharth Vidiyadharan from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

Furthermore, all the participants of the Binary Clash 360 received a scholarship amount of INR 5,000.

In addition to the scholarships, internship opportunities have been extended to all awardees, offering 2-6 months of hands-on R&D experience under the joint mentorship of IIT Madras researchers and Protectt.Ai professionals.

The event concluded with an award ceremony presided over by Mr. Rajesh Venugopal (General Manager, IDBI Bank). The event was sponsored by IDBI Bank and ISEA (Information Security Education and Awareness, MeitY), with Protectt.Ai as the Prize & Internship Partner, DSCI as the Outreach Partner, and Tally as the Technical Partner.

The program’s conceptualization and execution were led by Prof. Chester Rebeiro, with dedicated support from Mr. Rammohan Srinivasan, Dr. Noor Mohammad, Dr. Jaimandeep Singh, and the wider organizing team including Mr. Chandan N. Varma, Ms. Shubhalakshmi, Dr. Dhayala Kumar, and Mr. Elantarayan.

This initiative marks CyStar’s second national hackathon, following its success in Malware Analysis. By creating a platform that unites academia, industry, and government stakeholders, CyStar is shaping the future of cybersecurity learning and application in India.

As the hackathon concludes, the focus now shifts to joint research and development. The selected students will now embark on a collaborative internship journey at IIT Madras, co-developing industry-leading code obfuscation techniques that promise to advance national cyber resilience. This partnership between academia and industry not only nurtures talent but also accelerates innovation in the high-stakes field of software security.
