In collaboration with MeitY, IIT Madras is leading an ambitious project to develop a comprehensive IoT Security Ecosystem and Sandbox. The objective is to enhance IoT device security by addressing key vulnerabilities through the creation of secure lightweight embedded operating systems, advanced key establishment techniques, and identity management platforms. This initiative will improve hardware root of trust and device bootstrapping methods for IoT devices. The project further includes solutions like Software-Defined IoT Network ecosystems, network data path encryption, segmentation techniques, and behavioral monitoring of IoT devices. The security orchestration framework will integrate zero-trust principles for IoT network infrastructure.
A significant part of the initiative involves developing an IoT sandbox for functionality and security validation, focusing on indigenous hardware and firmware, as well as AI/ML algorithms for automated threat detection. This sandbox center, based in Bangalore, will enable threat sharing, validation of cellular IoT devices, and test case verification for IoT security. The platform aims to be a modular solution, supporting both in-house and third-party software, providing real-time security assessments for IoT ecosystems deployed across various sectors.
