About SETU

An innovative, bold and strategic national proposal for India’s sovereign blockchain architecture that includes an universal identity trust anchor to modernise Digital India from web2 to web3 through democratisation of trust, data empowerment and digital inclusion, in order to unlock huge efficiencies and opportunities in the Indian economy.

Spearheaded by IIT Madras, a national thought leader in blockchain, cryptography, and digital systems, in partnership with C-DAC, the premier R&D body of the Ministry of Information Technology, this proposal aims to unlock efficiencies, reduce fragmentation, and catalyse innovation, and thereby GDP growth.

IITM, established in 1959, is a premier public technical university in Chennai, India, recognized as an Institute of National Importance and consistently ranked among the top engineering institutions in the country. The institute has several academic departments and numerous research centers, fostering a vibrant environment for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

In October 2024, IIT Madras launched the Centre for Cybersecurity, Trust and Reliability (CyStar) to advance both fundamental and applied research in cybersecurity. CyStar focuses on areas such as blockchain, AI security, cryptography, quantum security, and IoT security, aiming to protect critical national infrastructure and address sector-specific security challenges.
